Cornell's Alex Green Wins Best Defensive Defenseman

ALBANY, N.Y. - ECAC Hockey has announced the winner of this year’s Best Defensive Defenseman Award, and Alex Green (Cornell University) has been honored.

This is the third straight season that a Cornell defenseman has been honored with this award, as Matt Nuttle (2019), and Alec McCrea (2018) were the previous two recipients.

Green (Jr. - Chicago, Ill.) led a Cornell blue line that ranked second in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 1.55 goals per-game in 2019-20. He was second on the team in +/- rating, boasting a +19 mark through 29 games. He also blocked 35 shots, and contributed on the offensive end with 16 points.

The Big Red finished the season as the No. 1-ranked team in the country.

The remainder of this year’s ECAC Hockey men’s major award winners will be announced throughout the week.

Hugh McGing Signs with the St. Louis Blues

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Western Michigan hockey senior captain Hugh McGing has signed a two-year contract with the National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues on Friday.

The deal begins in the 2020-21 season.

McGing spent four years with the Broncos, playing in 147 career games and totaling 117 points on 46 goals and 71 assists. The Chicago, Ill., native was drafted in the fifth round (138th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft after putting up 30 points on nine goals and 21 assists as a sophomore. McGing is a two-time All-NCHC selection, earning Second Team honors in 2018-19 and becoming the first Bronco in program history to earn First Team honors this season after tallying 35 points on 13 goals and 22 assists to lead the team.

"Before Hugh arrived on campus I remember watching him play in Cedar Rapids," said WMU head coach Andy Murray. "And every night he was the best player on the ice. He did the same here at Western Michigan. He exemplifies our mantra of being smart, fast and heavy as a player. The Blues got a good one."

McGing was also a four-time Academic All-NCHC selection during his career at Western Michigan and was also a finalist for the Senior CLASS award this season for his work on the ice, in the community and in the classroom.

He is the second Bronco to sign a pro contract this offseason, joining classmate Cam Lee, who signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
